JFCS East Bay’s Chaverim group provides social and educational opportunities for Jewish adults with mild to moderate developmental disabilities.
The goal of Chaverim is to give East Bay Jews with disabilities access to Jewish life that they otherwise might not have.
At monthly meetings, Chaverim members learn about Jewish holidays and traditions, socialize with other adults, and find connection to the larger Jewish community. Chaverim is open to people living in Alameda and Contra Costa counties, with gatherings taking place at JFCS East Bay’s Walnut Creek office or at community events. Activities can include Jewish holiday celebrations, watching a Jewish film, attending baseball games, visiting art fairs, bowling, sharing Israeli food, and playing trivia.
For many members, Chaverim meetings are the only organized Jewish activities that they have ever been able to participate in. There are no other programs that specifically provide social and educational opportunities for East Bay Jewish adults with developmental disabilities.
